While amazing teeth can certainly transform your appearance, if you are still unhappy with sagging facial features, lines and wrinkles, then you may feel that improving your smile was in vain. Fortunately, here at our dental offices in Breckenridge and Summit County, we can now deliver simple, minimally-invasive treatments that can also address cosmetic issues with your face, helping you to look younger and more attractive. These treatments are known as injectables.
Injectables is the term given to a selection of different treatments designed to improve various aspects of the face and neck that are administered, perhaps unsurprisingly, by injection. Each type of injectable is a chemical substance that has the ability to change something in the structure of the face. For example, Botox-based injectables create a ‘frozen' effect, while fillers are used to stimulate the production of collagen and ‘plump' the affected area. There are also some injectables that can destroy certain types of cells and therefore alter your appearance.
Here are Relaxation Dental Specialities, we are pleased to be able to offer three different types of injectables to our patients.
Botox® is one of the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatments in the world and can transform the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It comprises of a neurotoxin that is used to paralyze the muscles under the skin so that they can no longer contract and cause lines and wrinkles to form. Botox® is also currently being used to treat over 20 different medical conditions.
The FDA has only approved Botox® for injection in certain areas including the forehead, between the eyes and in the crow's feet around the eyes. The effects of treatment usually last around four months, but this varies between patients. After this time, you will need to schedule regular top-ups to maintain the results.
Juvéderm® is a family of injectables that are created using hyaluronic acid – a naturally occurring sugar found in the body. However, since our natural production of hyaluronic acid slows and eventually stalls as we age, we often find that we do not have enough to keep our skin looking plump and healthy. Juvéderm fillers are used to restore facial contours, smoothing out signs of our advancing age such as lines, wrinkles and folds. It is primarily used on areas of the face including the cheeks, lips and around the mouth and which type of Juvéderm is right for you will depend on the area of your face that you most wish to improve.
Like Botox®, the effects of Juvéderm are long-lasting but not permanent. Patients usually find that their results last between 12 and 24 months before re-administration of the filler is necessary. Similarly, the procedure itself is minimally invasive and requires virtually no downtime. You should be able to return to your usual activities within 24 hours of your treatment.
Kybella® is the registered product name of the only FDA-approved injectable that can obliterate fat cells in the area under your chin. This is a location where many people accumulate additional, stubborn fat cells that simply aren't affected by diet and exercise. This can lead to the development of jowls or a ‘double'chin', a feature that can strip definition from the face and make us appear older than we really are.
Kybella® uses a substance called deoxycholic acid which targets and destroys these fat cells. This annihilation is permanent since it is not possible for destroyed fat cells to regrow, only for existing, healthy ones to grow larger. The injection takes only a few moments and can be performed in your lunch break since there is absolutely no downtime. However, you may not get the result that you are seeking after just one treatment. Patients often schedule several Kybella® sessions to obtain the look that they are hoping for. It is possible to have up to 6 treatments, each with a minimum of one month between them.
